Stoke midfield duo Glenn Whelan and Liam Lawrence have both been called up to Ireland`s 28 man squad to play against Argentina on August 11th to mark the opening of the new Aviva Stadium. The match is just 3 days before the Potters opening Premier League game of the season at Wolves which may make them unlikely to start.

Both are key players for Giovanni Trapattoni and played a big part in Ireland almost making it to the World Cup in South Africa.

While Whelan`s future is looks set in stone Lawrence is expected to be heading for the exit after discussing his future with boss Tony Pulis last season, and a move to Celtic looked on the cards. However, things have since gone cold despite his enthusiasm for joining such a prestigious club.

Maybe a good performance against a manager less Argentina could reignite talks over the proposed £1.5 million move.
