It’s being reported that Stoke striker and Mali international, Mamady Sidibe has been hurt during a pitch invasion after Mali’s 2-0 win over Togo in the African Cup of Nations qualifier on Friday.
The match, which was played in Lome – the capital of Togo, apparently ended with disgruntled Togo fans invading the pitch which, according to reports, has resulted in Sidibe being ‘hospitalised’.
Although reports are confused, Stoke City issued a statement today saying that they are trying to confirm the circumstances and Sidibe’s situation.
Mali’s win confirmed their automatic qualification for the finals which will be held in Ghana during January and February next year. Sidibe was playing alongside former Hammers and Spurs player, Frederic Kanoute who now plays for Spanish club, Seville. It was also reported that he was injured in the same incident. Kanoute scored the first of the two goals.
French sports paper, L’Equipe reported comments from Mali coach Jean-Francois Jodar: “Mamady Sidibe took a blow, doubtless with a weapon, which caused bruising to his arm. Frederic Kanoute was hit with a belt. It was like a battlefield. There was blood everywhere in the dressing room.”
L’Equipe said that the injuries to both players were not serious.
It’s to be hoped that FIFA takes stern action against Togo if these attacks are confirmed.
