Kevin Friend will be the man in the charge of Gustavo Poyet`s Sunderland visit to the Britannia Stadium to face Stoke this weekend.

Friend has refereed six times this season handing out 18 yellow cards and no red cards, at an average of three cards per game.

The Leicester born referee was promoted to the Premier League select group of referee`s in 2009 and refereed the Capital One Cup final last season.

The official refereed Stoke three times last season. He was the man in the middle of Stoke`s 1-1 draw at Reading, where he sent off Dean Whitehead and gave Reading a last minute penalty, he was also in charge of the Potters annual victory at West Brom, and was also in charge of Stoke`s final day defeat to Tottenham, where he sent off Charlie Adam. Over the three fixtures Friend gave out 15 yellow cards and two red cards.

The 42-year-old officiated Sunderland twice last season. He refereed both Manchester clubs visits to the Stadium of Light. Sunderland came out 1-0 victors to City, but lost to Man Utd by the same score. Friend handed out 8 yellow cards over the two fixtures.
