Stoke City striker, Vincent Pericard has been sent to jail for four months – not for missing the goal, but for perverting the course of justice.

Pericard was sentenced at Plymouth Crown court today after being found guilty of pretending that his stepfather had been behind the wheel of his car as it was caught doing 103mph in March last year.

Tony Pulis has said that the club will stand behind the player, who has struggled for a first team place since joining the Potters twelve months ago. Pulis told the official site: ‘We can’t condone what he has done but he is not a nasty or bad person.

‘He has been very naive and made a mistake, which we have all done at some point.

‘Everyone associated with the football club is disappointed with what has happened, but we will all be standing right behind him.’
