Former Stoke manager, Gudjon Thordarson has been named the new boss of local rivals, Crewe Alexandria.

Thordarson was an integral part of the Icelandic ownership deal and took over from Gary Megson in November 1999 and continued at the help until he was sacked in May 2002 just after taking the Potters to promotion to the Championship. Since then he has been at Notts County and Barnsley and the Icelandic club, IA Akranes.

Alex are stuck solidly on the bottom of League 1 after just escaping relegation last season. He told the BBC: ‘I know it will require a lot of hard work and commitment. It won’t be easy, but I’m ready to take it on.’
