Jon Fortune has turned down a move from Charlton to Stoke City.

The Addicks’ official website have confirmed that Fortune will be staying at the Valley after all and ‘fighting for his place’ after both clubs had agreed a fee for the defender who spent the final months of last season on loan at the Britannia Stadium.

In other news, it now seems certain that Carl Hoefkens will be playing for the Baggies next season after discussing personal terms with the club yesterday. He didn’t feature in the Potters’ 2-1 defeat at Tranmere Rovers last night due to a hamstring injury but did spend the day talking to West Brom and seemed to be impressed by the deal that they’ve put on the table.

The departure of Hoefkens and the non-arrival of Fortune will leave a gap in defence for the Potters will only a week to go the first match of the season, although the arrival, on loan, of Stephen Wright is at least a plus.
