Jimmy O’Neill, who made 149 appearances for the Potters between 1960 and 1964, has died aged 76.

O’Neill started his playing career with Everton with whom he played for 11 years before joining Stoke in 1960 when he was signed by the legendary Tony Waddington. He was capped 17 times for his native Republic of Ireland and kept an impressive 48 clean sheets whilst between the sticks with Stoke.

After leaving the Victoria Ground he joined Darlington before ending up back in the Potteries playing for Port Vale under their then manager and another Stoke legend, Stanley Matthews. He retired from football after briefly rejoining the Potters in January 1967.
