Portsmouth keeper Asmir Begovic looks likely to sign for Stoke only 48 hours after being on the verge of completing a move to Spurs.

The 22 year old is much more likely to see regular action at the Brit and would compete alongside Thomas Sorensen. It appears that long serving second choice Steve Simonsen will head for the exit in the summer.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp said earlier “There is a big problem in terms of the goalkeeper and I think Stoke are in there. I think he has changed his mind”.

The proposed £2,000,000 move would all but finish the Potters chase of Pompey`s other keeper David James. Talks between the two clubs have been ongoing for the last 2-3 weeks and have been on-off since they started.

The permanent signing of Begovic is a much safer bet from Stoke. The Bosnian has been one of Pompey`s few stand out performers this season and has many years of premier league football ahead of him. James`s future is up in the air and he may even retire when his contract runs out in the summer and if he doesn`t make the England world cup squad.

Manager Tony Pulis has spoken at length about the need or another senior keeper to provide both Sorensen and Simonsen with some healthy competition and they seem to have found the right man. With Simo`s expected exit in the summer the club will probably be searching for another keeper in the summer.
