The Potters are reported to be close to signing a ‘Premiership utility player’ which, if the rumours are correct, is Blackburn Rovers’ defender Dominic Matteo. The 32 year old has not figured in Rovers’ first team line up this season and is reported to be keen on dropping a division in order to get some first team football.

Gillingham striker, Gary Mulligan has also been linked with a move to Stoke, but Burnley are also rumoured to be in the hunt for the striker who has scored eight times this season for the League 1 side.

In other news, Kevin Harper has returned to the Britannia Stadium at the end of his loan spell at Carlisle. He is reckoned to be surplus to requirements at present having only made one start for the Potters this season and his contract runs out in the summer.

Indications are that Lee Hendrie and Czech international, Patrik Berger may be heading away from Villa Park but not coming back to Stoke. Hendrie is still being linked with a move to Sheffield United and Stoke chairman, Peter Coates, thinks that Berger could join a club back in his own country.

No news yet of Andy Griffin after he started talks on a permanent move last week but was then promptly called back to injury stricken Pompey.
