There was a surprise face at Stoke City’s recent behind closed doors friendly against Macclesfield Town – a familiar German returned to our side.

Former Chelsea centre-half Robert Huth quickly established himself as a fan favourite during his time at the Britannia Stadium. Having joined for a reported £5million fee back in late August 2009, the now 33-year-old went on to make a total of 181 starting appearances for us with a further six showings from the substitutes bench. In those games, he contributed 18 goals from the heart of defence.

In the second half of the 2014/15 campaign he secured a loan spell out with Leicester City and he went on to sign for them on a permanent basis, helping them to the Premier League title in what was a stand out season for the whole club.

They did release him this summer though as they look to trim their age and he departed the King Power Stadium having again made good friends.

With him now being linked with Derby County and Aston Villa to name just two clubs on the rumour mill, it appears we may have stolen a march by virtue of his earlier ties to us as he is back at the club training with us, and he got a run out in the friendly.

Training as a favour is one thing, but getting a run out may imply something more – least it does to me.

It wasn’t just my tongue the story set wagging.
