Stoke City have had a transfer breaking record bid of around £18 million accepted for Porto midfielder Gianelli Imbula.

The French midfielder is currently travelling to the Potteries, where he is expected to undergo a medical and agree personal terms.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes is confident the deal can be completed by tonight`s 11pm deadline.

He told StokeCityfc.com:
“Talks have been progressing. Hopefully by the end of the day we’ll be able to announce something”

The 23-year-old is seen as an ideal replacement for Steven N`Zonzi, who left the club in the summer.

Imbula, who has been capped seven times for the French under-21 international team, only joined Porto in the summer from Marseille, for a record Portugueses signing of 20 million euros.

If the Potters can get the Imbula deal over the line, then the deal would smash the transfer record that saw Xherdan Shaqiri move to the Britannia Stadium in the summer for £12 million.
