Ryan Shawcross is reportedly being lined up by Newcastle, as they close in on a return to the Premier League, with Rafael Benitez’s side making the Stoke defender their ‘number one’ priority.

Surprisingly, given the ability Shawcross has, the former Manchester United defender isn’t subjected to speculation surrounding his future more often. It’s also a mystery as to how he’s only managed to win one England cap, which came on a night against Sweden he’ll wish to forget mind.

The Independent has claimed Newcastle are targeting several signings in the summer with Shawcross’ Premier League experience, proven quality too, putting him top of that list?

With Shawcross moving towards the final 12 months of his current contract at the Bet365 Stadium, almost 10 years on from his arrival from Man United and nearly 400 games later, this is seen as an opening by Newcastle.

Mark Hughes will almost certainly want to keep Shawcross, 29, at Stoke but as yet talks over an extended deal haven’t taken place – they probably will soon enough with the Potters captain though?
