Ryan Shawcross has been handed the captain`s armband for the fifth consecutive season.

The towering centre half has impressed new gaffer Mark Hughes enough to keep hold of the captaincy.

Mark Hughes told The Sentinel when asked if Shawcross was to stay as captain:

‘Yes, he stays, it`s the old clich√© about wanting 11 leaders out there on the pitch, but I can also see that the role is more than just ceremonial.

‘The role is important and I think Ryan takes on and embraces the role, and that’s why I am happy for him to carry on as captain.’

Shawcross has made the most Premier League appearances for Stoke and is close to making his 250th appearance for the club since his £1 million transfer from Manchester United in 2007.
