Having been given additional time off this summer owing to international commitments at the end of the campaign, Xherdan Shaqiri teamed back up with the squad in Switzerland on Sunday.

Kicking off pre season in his home country he explained was perfect for him, but he of course missed Monday’s opening pre season friendly against Neuchatel Xamax but he did return to the training pitches earlier that day to begin his own build up.

Speaking to the Official Website on Tuesday having now been back with us for a couple of days, Shaqiri admitted he’d love to get some pitch time when we face Swiss Super League side BSC Young Boys but he was more than onboard with the fact that manager Mark Hughes might feel the game comes too soon for his inclusion.

Talking about his return in general, he said.

‘It`s really nice to spend part of pre-season here, because this is my home, and I always feel really comfortable here. For me though, it is all about work and making sure we are ready for the new season that starts very soon.’

Shaqiri went on to say.

‘It is an important time of the season, it is where we get our fitness levels built up and work on important situations for the Premier league. Tactically it is a chance to work on ideas too, so there is a lot of things that we take from this period which helps us throughout the season ahead.’

Speaking about his hopes for Wednesday evening’s clash, he knew it would be entirely Hughes decision but he definitely wanted to play if the chance was offered.

‘Of course I want to play, that is only natural because I am a professional footballer – I always want to play. I know though that this is also a dangerous period because if we aren`t fully ready then you can pick up injuries. It was only a short break for me, so I feel in good shape, so we will see what the manager decides – it is, of course, his decision.’
