This week reports surfaced linking Stoke City with a move for Leicester City’s versatile midfielder Daniel Amartey.

The Stoke Sentinel were one of a number of outlets to cover this particular rumour, and it suggested that full Ghanian international was a potential option for us given his ability to cover a number of positions.

He is predominantly a straight midfielder I believe, but capable of excelling in a defensive midfield role as well as filling in at right back and I think on occasions Leicester played him in the middle of defence when push came to shove as well.

As Gary Rowett continues his rebuild of the squad following relegation from the Premier League last season, the 23-year-old makes sense on a number of levels given that versatility and the options he provides but he would potentially head to us with the defensive midfield role in mind – although it’s fair to say we’re not lacking in players capable of performing there.

If there’s any truth to this rumour, with the expectation that a few more older heads and legs will move on, Rowett’s words about new signing Etebo Oghenekaro will come to the fore.

“It was funny because the first game he played as a sitting midfielder and although he did well, it looked like he was a tiny bit inhibited. The following two games you could see what he’s all about once he’s given that room to go and make things happen.”
