League 2 side, Grimsby Town have spoken to Stoke City about signing young striker Martin Paterson.

Paterson, although still pondering over a new contract, is not eligible for a free move under the Bosman rules due to his age and any move away from the Britannia will involve a transfer fee.

The Northern Ireland Under 21 international played 15 games for the Mariners last season whilst on loan and wowed fans with six goals and their manager, Alan Buckley, has confirmed that he has spoken to the Potters about signing him up permanently.

Back at Stoke, the 20 year old struggled to get a first team spot, only managing ten appearances last season and all these were from the bench and will no doubt be interested in any approach from another club if it means the chance of regular first team football.
