Andy Wilkinson has been forced to retire from professional football.

The Stoke City academy graduate has been suffering the aftermath of a head injury he suffered at Blackburn Rovers last year, which has now forced the 31-year-old to hang up his boots.

The right back has been to see specialists in Canada but he still suffers from vertigo and a lack of peripheral vision after  being struck down with concussion in the FA Cup game after being struck with the ball.

The Stone born full back was given a six month contract in the summer to help with his rehabilitation and in a statement has been appreciative of the club:

‘I would like to sincerely thank everyone at football at all levels and including the fans and everyone who had supported me throughout my career and as a youngster.

‘I also wish to thank Stoke City for their continued support for which I am extremely grateful.’

Wilkinson made 192 appearances at the club including an FA Cup final, Europa League and helping the club get promoted to the Premier League.
