Stoke City manager Mark Hughes could be set to make a £6 million offer for Tottenham forward Jermaine Defoe.

Hughes looks to add to his goal shy strike force and fill the voids left by the departure of Michael Owen and Mamady Sidibe in the summer.

Defoe who is understood to be available to leave White Hart Lane could revive his strike partnership with Peter Crouch who he has partnered at Portsmouth and Tottenham.

The 30-year-old striker could favour a move to the Britannia Stadium in search of first team football to aid his bid to represent England in next year`s World Cup in Brazil.

A stumbling block could be the 5ft 4in players` wages which is currently £65,000-a-week, therefore he would have to take a considerable pay cut to fit in Stoke`s strict wage structure.
