Do we want Griffin back?

Andy Griffin, who reckoned we were not good enough for him in the summer, is now talking about a return to the Brit since he dropped out of the Derby first team.

The defender had a good spell on loan at Stoke last season when he was still at Portsmouth and was hotly tipped to sign up in the summer, but signed for newly promoted Derby County after being swayed by the extra money on offer.

But Griff’s fortunes have plummeted nearly as fast as the Rams’ and new manager, Paul Jewell is keen to off-load him in the January sales and Tony Pulis appears to be first in line to buy him back.

Just putting to one side, for the moment, whether we want someone who only turned his back on us six months ago, the question is do we now need a player that can’t even get into a Premier League relegation squad like Derby?

Last season, he struggled to get into the Pompey first team, but did a good job in defence for the Potters. The current back four are completely different from the one he left at the end of the season. But he could offer valuable experience and cover and could be worth a punt, especially if Derby are prepared to let him leave on the cheap.

No doubt, if he does rejoin, he will come professing his undying love for the club and fans, which many will find very hollow after his recent quick exit up the A50.
