David James in loan move to Stoke?

Credible reports are linking the Potters with a loan move for Portsmouth’s David James.

But the first question that springs to mind is ‘Why?’

Why would we want James, why would he want to come to Stoke and why would Pompey want him out?

Well, we all know about Pompey’s perilous financial circumstances and there seems to be a clause in the England keeper’s contract that would spark a contract extension if he played many more games for them – something that they just cannot afford.

Also, James still harbours hopes of being in the World Cup squad this summer but needs to be playing games to stand any chance of getting a space on the plane.

But surely Thomas Sorensen has the number one spot firmly tied up?

Yes, that’s what I think, so it does seem odd that James seems to think his short-term career ambitions lie at the Brit.

Sorensen could get injured and whilst Thomo did injure his finger recently, it didn’t seem serious and he’s supposed to now be fit and in any case Steve Simonsen is more than capable of standing in. Moving on the off-chance or thinking he’ll just walk pass Sorensen to start does seem presumptuous to say the least.

After all Sorensen’s penalty save exploits why would we drop him for James?

We wouldn’t. But there have been rumours that the Danish keeper has been attracting the attention of other European clubs with his recent good form so, whilst he’s said he’s staying at Stoke, something might be going on in the background.
