Stoke City have let it be known that reports yesterday of a Burnley bid for centre half Ryan Shawcross were false.

The Stoke Sentinel referenced the reports in the national press which suggested that Burnley had offered £10million for the player, with the indication that Stoke themselves were encouraging offers, but sources inside the club’s hierarchy described the pieces as ‘absolute baloney’.

In fact Stoke wanted to let it be known that they were concerned to be portrayed as welcoming offers for their club captain.

The outlet also references sources at Burnley who pointed out that another centre half was not one of manager Sean Dyche’s priorities ahead of the transfer window shutting.
