Assistant manager Mark Bowen has hailed the form of Switzerland international Xherdan Shaqiri following his bright start to Stoke City’s 2017/18 season.

Speaking to the Official Website as he looks ahead to this weekend’s clash with Manchester City, Bowen praised Shaqiri’s willingness to work on his overall game – especially efforts off the ball – as he believes it’s helped him have his most productive start to the season (more minutes played, created more chances and had more shots) ever since he joined from Bayern Munich a few years back.

‘We have been delighted with Shaq, because he has been absolutely outstanding for us so far and he really looks as though he as a focus about him. He ended last season strongly, and he came back in for pre-season in fairness to him looking really strong, fit and healthy. He has been here for a couple of years now, and while it maybe took him a little while to understand what the league is all about, it really seems that he has found his feet now.’

Bowen went on to say that he felt we were now seeing the best of Shaqiri and long may it continue.

‘He is certainly showing his qualities now, which we always knew he possessed to be fair, but it is his work out of possession, getting back and helping out his teammates, which has been the biggest difference this season.’

Adding.

‘Maybe last year he just wanted to get the ball and produce some magic, but he now realises the importance of the other side of the game too, which he is doing really well.’
