Stoke defender, Ryan Shawcross has earned a call-up to the England squad for the friendly against Egypt on Wednesday.

The prospect of his first full England cap is not likely to dispel the misery he is obviously suffering after his tackle on Aaron Ramsey yesterday left the young Welsh international with a badly broken leg.

Fabio Capello delayed the announcement of his squad to consult with his assistant, Franco Baldini after the red card incident, but decided he’d still like the 22 year old in the squad and Ryan was phoned with the news whilst he was being driven home by his mother after the match at the Britannia.

It seems that, after some time to reflect on the horrendous injury, most have agreed with Tony Pulis that there was no malice in the tackle and he’s been backed up by the referee, Peter Walton, who told Rory Delap that he knew it wasn’t intentional and that he had no option but to send him off because of the seriousness of the injury.

Hopefully Ryan can put this behind him and concentrate on training with the England squad this week. Capello has said that he will take a look at the Stoke defender’s state of mind when he reports to the England training camp.

Meanwhile, it’s being reported that Aaron Ramsey has undergone surgery on a broken fibula and tibia and is likely to be out for the rest of this year. Despite an inappropriate chant from a small minority of moronic Stoke fans, all the fans joined in with sympathetic applause as he was carried away and we wish him a speedy recovery.
